Though many were disappointed when Google failed to refresh its Nexus lineup in 2016, recent news that a new Nexus 7 could be unveiled later this year have revived fans’ spirits. The latest reports, which peg the Google Nexus 7 against Apple’s iPad Pro 2, are particularly encouraging. Here’s the latest on the highly anticipated Google tablet.

The Google Nexus 7 will be known as the Pixel 7

Gigjets suggests that Google will introduce the Nexus 7 under the Pixel brand, calling it the Pixel 7. The outlet notes that since Google’s venture into the smartphone market, it has began phasing out the Nexus brand. But though releasing the highly anticipated new Google Nexus 7 in 2017 as the Pixel 7 would give the Pixel line a boost, the rebranding’s effect on sales is being questioned. Gigjets notes that the Nexus brand is, after all, a more recognizable name around the world than Pixel.

The Google Nexus 7 will compete against the iPad Pro 2

Both the new Google Nexus 7 and the iPad Pro 2 are expected out this year and, as such, tech industry watchers are expecting Google’s new tablet to come loaded with enough powerful specs and features to take on Apple’s next premium tablet. Sources suggest that the Google Nexus 7 could come loaded with the Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of internal storage with expandable memory of up to 2 TB. The Nexus 7 2017 could also feature two cameras — one with a 13-megapixel sensor and one with an 8-megapixel sensor — and a display with 2560 x 1440 resolution.

The Google Nexus 7 is expected to run the company’s rumored Andromeda OS, which reportedly combines the power and functionalities of the Chrome and Android operating systems. Though Google has not said anything about the Nexus 7 2017, the device is expected to come out sometime in the third quarter of 2017.
