Tag Heuer's Android Wear 2.0-packing smartwatch is landing in May – Wareable
Swiss watch giant Tag Heuer is planning to launch its second Android Wear smartwatch in May according to an interview with the company’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver.
Back in 2015, shortly after the arrival of the first Tag Heuer Connected Wear watch, Biver had suggested that we could see a second generation model by the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017. It looks like the hold up with Android Wear 2.0 has pushed that release into this year.
Biver confirmed to Neue Zürcher Zeitung that the new Tag smartwatch will ship with Android Wear 2.0 and is set to be available in two different models, with a smaller version aimed at women. It’s also set to come in different colours and finishes.
While we don’t have any confirmation on the names yet, it looks like we can expect a more feature-packed device than its predecessor including the ability to make purchases with the watch and built-in GPS to give it more sporty credentials. We can also expect improvements on the battery and display fronts as well. The watch housing and design is still being developed in Switzerland as Tag resumes its relationship with Intel to provide the power.
Android Wear 2.0 is coming…
Biver didn’t confirm whether prospective buyers will have the option to trade in their Android Wear-powered watch for a mechanical one in in future like they could with the first Connected.
As well as confirming new hardware, Biver also spoke about how it’s faring on the smartwatch sales front with the watch maker having sold 56,000 Connected watches since the $1,500 watch went on sale in 2015, despite only expecting to sell 20,000. While it’s nowhere close to Apple Watch sales, that’s still impressive for a premium smartwatch. Biver hopes that it will shift 150,000 smartwatches in 2017.
It’s set to be a busy next few months for Google’s Android Wear partners with Casio, New Balance and Swarovski set to launch smartwatches running the latest version of the OS. LG is also rumoured to be launching two new smartwatches to coincide with the official Android Wear 2.0 release date, which is slated for 9 February.
